Could be a good place to play but is a little noisy and out of control at times. Shouting by management while dealing Black Jack is disruptive of the poker tables right next to it. Management shouts all the time instead of going around an announcing blind changes etc. Management loves to play loud rock music that makes it impossible to hear the other end of the table. Of course this causes the whole room to shout. Gives you a headache. With the Poker Zone going downhill, some of the players there are now coming here. Same problems that kill the Zone is now at the Lanes: soft play, collusion, talking about hands after out and play still going on, foreign language at table, cell phone use and foul language. It seems the management is not concern about the problems and is raking in the take. I predict this room will look like the Zone in a year. Grand Rapids and Muskegon have some good rooms so you do not have to put up with the problems.
More
Since this room is almost equal distance for me to other rooms, I have given them another go.
I am even more disappointed with the goings on. Dealers are allowed to play on their days off in the room. These are the some of the same dealer who look at players muck cards to get an idea of how different players play. This is very helpful information that the management sort of turns a blind eye on. I would like the State to do like the casinos and prohibit dealer play on site.
Another problem is the soft play when a couple of dealers or more are at the same table. Check downs are common when they are heads up and chops are normal.
A bigger problem is the pay offs. There is no set schedule for pay offs and the same dealers playing are sometimes the floor and make up the pay offs. One tournament had over 60 players with 7 places being paid. The problem is that the top 3 got almost 90% of the pay off. The bottom did not even make expenses. So much for the good player beating out 60 other players and being rewarded. This is not even close to casino structure pay offs, but gives a smoke and mirror illusion of big tournaments. But ones has to ask if the pay offs are slanted when the dealers are on the final table and their friends are making payoffs. This is especially true in the smaller tournaments.
This could be a good place to play with some changes. I also would like to see the State make some changes so the playing field would not be slanted or distorted. They could start with a posted pay off schedule.

The State has changed some rules about dealers playing etc but this room chooses to ignore them. A lot going on here that is wrong and if they do not change their ways they will be closed.

I really believe that this is a very well ran room. Dealers and floor may not always be right but no one is perfect we all make what I like to call human errors. This room is only trying to do the best they can so that they don’t end up like the Poker Zone. As for dealers having an advantage over play in the room, you have to understand that they ARE dealers and they probably see more of you then your own wife and kids. I don’t think its fair to judge that dealers can get a tell over mucked cards or what not when it may only be about recognizing the same plays over and over. Honestly it doesn’t take rocket science to catch on to poor play, reads, and tells. I truly believe that anyone that can jump on a website and try to criticize this room should try to run a poker room themselves that is trying to intergrate the segregated players of Century and “The Zone”. I think this takes a lot of courage, strength, and know how to handle as many as up to 100 players at a time. I also strongly believe that even though Russ, who is the managment at century, may not always seem pleasant but he does a very fine job of the way he runs the room and does always 100% of the time ENFORCE the rules. I feel he is very big on keeping players as honest as he can (even though these are poker players we are talking about). I guess if you look at the big picture here yes, they play music but that’s what makes the place better than the boring casino and the PZ. Yes, the dealers play on their days off but that will soon no longer be allowed. Most dealers that work at charity poker rooms 90% of the time are very passionate about the game and thats why they became dealers. I honestly feel that dealers don’t play to win money and take advantage of players, most of the time dealers don’t cash out so this advantage “Aces and spades” speaks of only exists in his own head (probably got called by a dealer on a bluff and he’s just upset so he has to retaliate by posting wild accusations about the room, dealers, and managment ect.). Yes, Russ may shout when blinds are up in tournaments but thats the most ridiculous thing to assume thats what makes him such a horrible person. I have been to many many poker rooms in Michigan and have seen the floor stand in the middle of the room and yell that blinds were up, maybe someone needs to turn their hearing aid down a little bit and maybe it would’t seem so loud along with the music. I have been to this poker room on numerous occasions and never once thought the music was too loud or the managment was poor. I have been in a situation where I was a victum of collusion and I Russ took the proper actions of rectifying the situation by banning cheaters. So just a little word of advice to Ace of Spades; its not polite to improperly represent this room and try to convince website visitors to believe that this poker room is a horrible place to play. If you don’t like this poker room then I suggest you go somewhere else because I seriously believe your slander of this room is unfair to the people who work really hard to keep this room more like family rather then just a place to play poker. With all that being said I would just like to say that I ABSOLUTELY love this poker room and the players. I ABSOLUTELY believe that Russ is the perfect managment for this room and I ABSOLUTELY 100% don’t ever think this room is going anywhere

There is a reason professional poker rooms do not let their dealers play and it is a good one. All should use that rule. And the State has said the following:
Operating Games at a Millionaire Party
Anyone assisting in the operation of an event (dealers, pit bosses, tournament directors, and floor managers) must be employed by or an agent of the location, the lessor, or the supplier. Operation is anything other than handling cash, chips, or game records (which must be handled by a bona fide member of the organization)………
10. A location owner or lessor, a shareholder of a privately held corporate owned or leased location, partner, officer, agent, or employee of a location owner or lessor, or a person residing in the same household as a location owner or lessor, shareholder of a privately held corporate owned or leased location, partner, officer, agent or employee of a location owner or lessor shall NOT do any of the following:
a.
Participate in the Millionaire Party Management at the location in which he or she owns, leases, represents, or works.
b.
Be an officer of a qualified organization conducting a licensed gaming event at the location in which he or she owns, leases, represents, or works.
c.
Participate as a PLAYER in any gaming event being conducted under the millionaire party license at the location in which he or she owns, leases, represents, or WORKS.

Of course rules do not apply to Russ and as of last Friday (Oct 1,2010) dealers were still playing at Century Lanes.
The real problem is the collusion among some dealers playing and not adhering to the published rules. When their violations are pointed out, the dealer will not correct the situation. Also Russ has been told about collusion but he says there is nothing he can do about it because it is too hard to prove. Russ has never ever boot anyone out for that infraction even when I have pointed them out to him.
The music is a problem because when you can not hear the other end of the table or the voice tell of other players, it is a problem. Of course I also do not think I should be subjected to music that is not to my liking. I am their to play poker and if I want music I will go to a concert.
Russ does not shout just on blinds going up but he sits at the other end of the room and shouts to find out how many players are at a table. He could walk over and count! Very disruptive till you get to the final table.
Russ will also sit and turn the volumn up while watching TV which when mixed with music is enough to drive you crazy! That along with his own disruptive towel snapping games with dealers as he chases them around the room leaves a lot to be desired.
So, why do I still go there? Well, Russ is not there as much as he used to be and the replacements do not turn on the music or go screaming around the room.
PS I am hoping the State cracks down on them and a complaint form has been filed. We will see if it does any good. And Baddest is a dealer at the Lane who also plays.

This is an old thread but why not I’m bored. If Phil Ivey walked in and started playing, would that be cheating just because he has more skill and experience than you could ever hope to? Anyone can read a tell, and yeah dealers who sit at the tables all day are going to in all likelihood be more skilled at reading them than the average player. BUT NOT MORE THAN THE AVERAGE GOOD PLAYER. Honestly you’re like a meter maid writing excessive citations because you’re angry you couldn’t get into the LAPD. Stop hiding behind “it’s not fair” and start being better at the game…
